On November 20, 2024, during the 7th International Conference of the Pan African Association of Cleft Lip and Palate (PAACLIP) held in Harare, Zimbabwe, Dr. Obady Vitswamba was elected Vice President of this prestigious association. This achievement, a testament to his dedication and expertise, highlights his leadership in advancing cleft care across Africa. Over the next two years, he will focus on developing strategic policies, fostering collaboration among African nations, and improving the care provided to patients with these conditions.
The conference, a high-profile event, brought together renowned professionals and organizations from Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Participants engaged in discussions on innovations and best practices aimed at enhancing the management of cleft lip and palate conditions.
Among the attendees was a delegation from Bethesda Hospital (CHB), a CBCA healthcare facility based in Goma. The delegation included Dr. Obady Vitswamba, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon; Ms. Louange Kahindo, a Speech Therapist; and Mr. Hagay Musyenene, an Anesthetist-Intensive Care Specialist. They proudly represented the CBCA, showcasing its ongoing efforts to provide high-quality healthcare services to vulnerable populations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
A highlight of the conference was Dr. Obady’s presentation during a panel discussion, where he detailed the remarkable impact of the partnership between the CBCA and Smile Train, a global organization dedicated to cleft care. This partnership enables the CBCA to offer FREE comprehensive cleft care, including psychosocial support, nutrition, surgery, speech therapy, and dental care. Dr. Obady emphasized how this holistic approach addresses the multifaceted needs of patients, significantly improving their quality of life and social integration.
Dr. Obady’s election as Vice President of PAACLIP is a tremendous source of pride for the CBCA.
