From the 24th to 29th September 2024, the UEM Africa Region in cooperation with the Africa Department is implementing an international workshop on Education about people with special needs (Diaconia) in the church and communities, hosted by the ELCT-NWD in Bukoba, Tanzania. The workshop is attended by 17 participants from UEM African member churches namely CBCA, ELCT-KAD, CADELU, ECC, EPR, ELCT-NWD, EAR, EEC, facilitators and UEM officials.
The official opening of the workshop started by a welcome note from Rev. Dr. Josephat Rweyemamu the Dean of ELCT-NWD on behalf of the Bishop Rev. Dr. Abednego Keshomshahara who had other commitments out of the Country. The Dean welcomed all participants to feel at home. He read the word of God from Luke 4:16-19. He insisted on how the Diaconia and serving people with disability as an important aspect for church sustainability. He shared the challenges faced by people with disabilities, for example; the killing of a child with albinism in Tanzania. The church has to bring hope to those who are hopeless by helping them in different capacities so that they can experience the Love of God. Thereafter, he officiated the workshop by a word of prayer.
The UEM program officer Mrs. Christine Musongya presented greetings from UEM and appreciated participation of all participants. She made an introduction of UEM and it's activities.
The 2030 agenda for sustainable development and it 17SGDs pledge to leave no one behind and recognize disability as an issues that cuts across all SDGs. This workshop aims to refresh knowledge on how the Church contributes to improving the living conditions of people with special needs for their integration. The following topics are being presented;
Overview on people with special needs in Africa Perspective: Church responsibility, Ways to support, Rights and obligations, Challenges and opportunities.
Sustainable strategies to fund organization dealing with People with Special Needs.
Plan and policies standards to improve life of People with special needs
Apart from these topics, sharing from different diaconia institution and field visit is part and parcel of learning process. It is believed that at the end of this workshop participants will be able to plan on sustainable strategies for funding, developing and updating policies to be used in the church institutions.
